Solbadande fåglar 2 / Sunning birds 2

Standard

Realized that I had forgotten to include one I saw yesterday in Red Butte Canyon.

In the middle of the dam, a Double-crested Cormorant Phalacrocorax auritus swam around for about 20 minutes, displaying some strange behaviour. First of all, when it caught a fish at one point, it seemed to have problems swallowing it, and tried to solve this by diving and possibly use the water pressure to push the fish inside his mouth. Whatever it was he tried to do, it worked. A little later I saw him swim around with his wings spread just as when they are sunning on land, with the upper side of the wing directed towards the sun. I can’t remember having seen this behaviour before, but perhaps it is really common and I just can’t remember.
