Wildlife in City Creek Canyon

Standard

We went to City Creek Canyon today after the thunder had stopped, and had some surprising observations:A tarantula! Haven’t tried identifying to species yet, but the first one I’ve seen in the wild. Hard to tell from the pictures, but it is approximately the size of my hand. It was being chased by a wasp the entire time we saw it. Tomas identified as Desert Tarantula Aphonopelma iodius

A large butterfly that sat still long enough for me to take a picture. Again, not identified to species as my books are in Debb’s car and she’s not home yet.
Tomas has tentatively identified it as Great Spangled Fritillary Speyeria cybele

Also a snake! This is the fourth snake I’ve seen in the US, and only the second one that has been still long enough to take a picture. Tomas identified it as a Racer Coluber constrictor.

We also saw Turkeys Meleagris gallopavo and lots of other smaller birds, but these three were the only ones I took pictures of.
