Ugly dinosaurs

Standard

I was in Colorado with Debb this weekend, traveling along the Dinosaur Diamond through Vernal, Dinosaur, Grand Junction, Fruita, and Price. We saw lots of great dinosaur stuff, including the magnificent Dinosaur National Monument, but also LOTS of ugly, horrible dinosaurs. As these are generally more fun, here are some samples:OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

“D is for Dinosaur, Colorado!”

What about dinosaurs weighting more than 26000 lbs?

Yay!

Wait, what? Really? I am guessing this may not be a place where they talk very much creationism. Or, then again, maybe it is. Who knows. We didn’t stop, because we’re not insane.

Do you want to live on Brontosaurus Boulevard? We had hamburgers in a biker bar there.

This preposterous Triceratops guards the driveway to a shed. It was not the first very ugly dinosaur we saw during the trip, and it wasn’t the last… Its neighbour on the other side of the driveway was this charming young this:

By “charming” I of course mean “maniacally grinning ulceriferous monstrosity”. I assume it is supposed to be a Pachycephalosaurus. If so, it’s having a bad day.

This was the first ugly dinosaur we saw. It’s a Ceratosaurus (???) in Vernal, Utah. I maintain that it has the expression of a 50-year-old man who’s sitting in a bar looking at women 30 years his junior and thinking, “Yeah, you know you want it, baby” when they stare at him disgustedly.

This is where we stayed in Vernal. The dinosaur head was surrounded by stones, including some petrified wood. We visited the Utah Field House of Natural History State Park Museum (or UFHNHSPM for not-very-short), and I’ll upload some pictures from there later. On the way out of Vernal heading for Dinosaur national Monument (which I’ll also upload pictures from later), we had the opportunity to be better acquainted with this pink smiling thing:

We then went to Dinosaur (see above), after which we took the 139 down to Grand Junction, where we stayed for another night in a non-dinosaur themed place. On Sunday, we went through Colorado National Monument to Fruita, where we visited the Dinosaur Journey (more pictures another day..). Just outside, this Stegosaurus:

fought this Allosaurus:

While this Triceratops-themed car was parked outside the building:

Anyone who doesn’t want this car is strongly encouraged to leave this page NOW. Central Fruita was filled with dinosaur stuff. Like this Stegosaurus bike rack:

It was also home to the biking Velociraptor:

And the ugliest of all the dinosaur statues:

Fortunately, this beast was chained to the ground inside a high fence…
